Managing and tracking your search engine statistics is important and serves two purposes. First of all, you can check up on your search competition. Simply knowing what sites link to your competitor site can permit you a means to gain new backlinks. What you can do is contact the same people and obtain the same links as they have. That way, you can more or less get into their shoes and steal their spot.
Secondly, you can monitor your own search rankings to understand which specific search terms are driving traffic to your site. Then you can decide whether to focus more of your content on those terms or just focus more on the monetization of those pages. For example, you can test different affiliate link positions, change the text, etc.
