Be proactive and get inspired by others

If you want to achieve anything in life, effect a change, or make an influence, you need to have the basic capability to take initiative in your endeavors. Being proactive is a fundamental that I strongly believe in, and I am very much inspired by reading others efforts to create changes as well. This is why I love reading sites like RD.com - Make Your Mark, which is a new section on RD.com.

Reader's Digest believes in the power of the individual to create change, and this is very much in line with my principles as well. Make Your Mark is their interactive platform to help people connect and act.

Usually I take a bit of time out every day and read a little about the "People" or the "Causes" and make a mental note of my favorites. For example, there’s this story about Charles Fletcher who provides horse therapy to children with disabilities. He has provided over 65,000 free equine sessions to children with disabilities, such as autism or physical disabilities. His organization is called SpiritHorse and its mission is to "assist individuals with special needs in reaching their full potential through interaction with horses." This is so inspiring for me considering the fact that Fletcher is 69 years old, works seven days a week, 10 hours a day, and walks up to 15 miles per day while guiding the retired show ponies. Though he does this all for free, Fletcher maintains that he is the highest-paid person in the world because he gets paid in hugs and smiles from those amazing children. Isn’t that fantastic?

Then there are causes such as The National Hospice Foundation which assists anyone facing serious illness, death, and grief to experience the best that humankind can offer.

The Make Your Mark section also has a “Weekly Challenge” which you can take yourself and discuss. It encourages you by offering you various options by which you can step, stretch, or leap your way to a better world.

So check out Make Your Mark at RD.com, see what others are doing to make a difference, and get inspired! And while you’re at it, do check out the Reader's Digest Homepage as well for more great stuff to read.
